With so many summer activities to choose from there is bound to be something you’ll actually ENJOY doing! Factor in the enormity of the pandemic and that we have all been locked inside for months and months, there truly is not better time to get outside.

Consider these suggestions if you live in and around the

GTA, Caledon, Halton Hills or Orangeville areas:

  • Hiking – Places like Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, the Bruce Trail and the Caledon Trailway or the 8km path around Island Lake are all excellent places to hike as are the Forks of The Credit Provincial Park and Halton’s Hilton Falls Conservation area.

  • Biking – Some of these same places also offer biking opportunities for various skill levels and both the Albion Hills and Kelso Conservation areas have great mountain biking hills for those looking for something a little more strenuous. Caledon in particular is known for its hills and valleys and beautiful roadways that make for an ideal cycling adventure. Consider stopping by Caledon Hills Cycle in Inglewood if you need any gear.

  • Kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding – Many locations offer rentals so you don’t need equipment to enjoy this calming yet impactful form of exercise. If you do own a paddleboard or kayak you can head out to Island Lake, Ken Whillans, Quarry in Caledon Village or Kelso to soak up the summer sun while you paddle the afternoon away. If you don’t, Kelso is just one of the areas where you can rent the equipment you need.

  • Swimming – with so many recreation centres, outdoor picnic areas, beaches and of course your own backyard pools, getting in a few lengths is one of the best forms of exercise you can do. It’s easy on the joints, a great cardio and core workout and talk about adding some definition to those legs and arms. All you need is a pair of goggles, a swimsuit and a towel. Oh – and maybe a bit of sunscreen too!

  • Sports - Mindful of pandemic protocols we can still be hopeful for plenty of adult baseball leagues, soccer leagues, cricket pitches or lawn bowling, there really is a sport for every speed of athlete!

  • Golf - Of course there are an abundance of golf courses throughout the area, many offering some pretty spectacular scenery too. Devil’s Pulpit and Toronto’s Osprey Valley (actually located outside of the Village of Alton) come to mind but we’re pretty sure you have a favourite. Feel free to share it in the comments section! Just make sure you walk the course instead of driving it to be sure you get your “steps” in.

  • Walking – Did we mention walking? I’m pretty sure we did and I’m pretty sure you’ll find most medical experts suggest that the simple act of walking at least 30 minutes a day at a brisk pace is a great way to get the kind of exercise the average adult requires. Summer makes it easy to walk – no ice or snow to deal with and if the daytime heat is too much for you, walk early in the morning or just after dinner or at dusk when it tends to cool down a bit.

Earlier this month we also talked about summer as a great time to eat right. Being outside, getting all that fresh air and exercise and with an abundance of healthy, delicious fruits and veggies all locally grown, this is the best time of year to work on reducing your stress, eating well and getting some exercise.
